Professor of Physics

Tools: |
- CAPA (Computer Assisted Personalized Approach)
- Respondex
|
Benefits for Faculty: |
1. CAPA
- Opportunity to provide large classes, such as the Astronomy course that has 400 students, the same set of ten problems with every student having a different set of numbers.
- Each CAPA set has about ten problems and by the end of the semester, students will have solved one hundred problems.
2. Respondex or RX Show
- Way for instructor to receive immediate feedback from students, especially useful in large classes like the Astronomy courses.
- Way for instructor to integrate such feedback in Powerpoint slides so as to show the students' answers back to them immediately.
- Way to incorporate polling questions to get an idea of what the thinking is as well as test questions that are based on what was presented in class during the lecture.
|
Benefits for Students: |
- Respondex and CAPA are well-liked by the students
- Motivational e.g. CAPA Century Club strategy
- Gain and keep attention throughout the lecture
|
Teaching Tips: |
"I think that most good teachers know the things that they need to do in order to keep students motivated and to keep them engaged in class, keep lectures interesting. I think the CAPA Century Club is a great motivator. I have it in all my classes. I have found it useful to establish friendly competition. For example, my Thermodynamics students do ten problems every week. [When] my Astronomy students do ten problems, I will show my Thermodynamics students how well my Astronomy students are doing as a way of motivating them." |
