Teaching with Emerging Technologies
April 10 , 2008,
11:30 am to 1:30 pm, Location TBA
Find out how web 2.0 technologies - blogs, podcasts, wikis, video, RSS feeds and more - are being used in teaching and what research is being done to assess the impact of these strategies during the Teaching with Emerging Technologies luncheon.
During this 2-hour event, Professor Berger will describe how he has incorporated web 2.0 technologies in his teaching and provide an overview of his research and outcomes thus far.
Discussion will ensue about how these technologies are currently being, and potentially could be, used at GW. The discussion will be facilitated by Phil Wirtz, Professor of Decision Sciences and of Psychology at GW.
Lunch will be available to registered participants.
Guest Speaker:
Edward Berger,
Associate Professor, School of Engineering and Applied Science, University of Virginia.
Brief Bio:
In Professor Berger's 12 years as a faculty member (starting at the University of Cincinnati in 1996, joining the University of Virginia in 2005), he has been recognized for both teaching excellence and research productivity as an expert in the nonlinear behaviors of mechanical joints and interfaces. He has been rewarded for exemplary teaching at the department, school, and University levels, including the 2002 Professor of the Year award from the University of Cincinnati College of Engineering, and one of several 2007 All-University Teaching Awards from the University of Virginia. He has also been awarded the 2008 Outstanding Faculty Award for Teaching with Technology from the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia.
Last year, the National Science Foundation awarded Berger a three-year, $500,000 grant to assess the effectiveness of what he's calling "Higher Ed 2.0." Professor Berger is exploring ways to bring so-called "Web 2.0" technologies - blogs, wikis, and even YouTube - into his courses, allowing students to learn from one another as well as their professor.
