Prometheus to Blackboard Transition (2003-2004)

At the end of 2002, Prometheus was purchased from the George Washington University by Blackboard, Inc. The University opted to engage a measured transition for faculty and student from Prometheus to Blackboard for online course delivery and communications. The staff of the CITL worked closely with ISS to make the transition smooth and functional for all of its constituents.

The image below is a screenshot from BbNews, a website established to communicate all pertinent information to faculty and students about the transition, and to provide the community helpful resources. It also housed frequently asked questions, how-to guides, and a feedback mechanism designed to help the CITL staff remain aware of hot topics throughout this challenging period for the academic community:

Chronology of the Prometheus to Blackboard transition

February 2003

A Blackboard Learning System server will become available to faculty for course development.  During this time, delivery of course material will still be available through the use of Prometheus.  Blackboard workshops should begin in late-February and continue throughout the entirety of the transition process.

Late Spring/Early Summer 2003

Blackboard Learning System integration with the Banner student information system and LDAP authentication will be tested.  Through these means, the goal is to have account creation and student enrollment in Blackboard courses automated, reducing the burden on faculty and / or students.

August 2003

A Blackboard Learning System server will be available for production and delivery of courses.  Courses will be automatically populated with students via Banner.

Fall 2003 & Spring 2004 Semesters

Prometheus and Blackboard will be run concurrently for course delivery.

May 31, 2004

This will be the cut-off date for course delivery using Prometheus.  Prometheus will only be available to administrators after this date to provide access for specific and limited academic record retrieval needs.

Summer 2004 semester

Blackboard Learning System will be the only centrally-supported campus solution for online course delivery and communication.
