Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a copy of SPSS?

SAS is the only software that we distribute. There is no entity on campus that provides users with individual copies of SPSS. However, SPSS is installed and available for use in most computer labs on campus.

Can I get a copy of SAS without filling out the form / bringing blank CDs/ getting approval?

No, you will need all of those unless you are faculty with a faculty ID card. In which case, you will still need to fill out the form.

Can I just bring my laptop and have you put it on there?

No. SAS will be distributed only on CDs. Please bring 3 blank CDs to the Instructional Technology Lab.

Can you put SAS on my USB key /thumb drive/ external HDD?

No. SAS will be distributed only on CDs. Please bring 3 blank CDs to the Instructional Technology Lab.

I hear that SAS doesn’t work on Macs. Is that true?

In many ways, this is true. SAS discontinued development on SAS for Apple with version 6.12. We presently distribute 8.2 (which is the version taught in most classes) and 9.1.3 for PC for comparison.

There are quite a number of differences between 6.12 and 8.2 such that the end user may find it challenging to replicate what they have learned in class in 8.2. Furthermore, SAS 6.12 won’t run in OS X and requires OS 9 to be installed on your machine.

So what is a Mac user to do? There are a few options. If the user happens to have OS 9 installed on the Mac (less and less common) they are welcome to pick up a copy of 6.12 for Mac and use that. If they have Virtual PC or Parallels desktop or even Boot Camp for their Mac, they can pick up a copy of SAS 8.2 for PC. Finally, SAS is installed in computer labs around campus including 24-hour computer labs that the students are welcome to use at any time.

Where can I go for help with SAS?

Presently, there is no centralized location for assistance with SAS.

Problems with the SAS installation:

Assistance with SAS usage:

  • Consult with course professor, in particular with regards to SAS functions required for the course.
  • Google.com is an excellent resource for finding an answer to a specific question.
    • Begin with a detailed search with as many search terms as makes sense
    • Broaden your search (fewer terms) if Google yields too few results.
  • SAS online documentation
