SIWI '08: In the Classroom and Beyond
(Tuesday, August 19 - Thursday, August 21)

From a walking tour and faculty discussion of innovative teaching spaces here at GW … to hands-on workshops in creating eAssignments for classroom, hybrid or fully online courses … to a discussion of what happens to learning in and out of the classroom when 'Teaching in the age of Google' … the Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning’s (CITL) Summer Intensive Workshop Institute (SIWI) offers faculty an up-close and hands-on look at where university-level teaching and learning is headed, with and without technology.

Workshops will be offered in podcasting, advanced PowerPoint, creating a blog in Blackboard, exploring Second Life, and more. Faculty may attend all three days, or select dates. All GW faculty invited and lunch is included with registration.

The program will include:

Day 1: Engaging students in the classroom

Tuesday, August 19 (9:00am-4:30pm)

This day features a walking tour of innovative teaching spaces at GW, with presentations by GW faculty on their teaching approaches and experiences. We will hear from faculty about their use of iPods to engage their students in the classroom, student response systems (Turning Point), and enhanced lecture capture (Colonial Cast).

Day 2: Engaging students outside the classroom

Wednesday, August 20 (9:00am-4:30pm)

This day looks at trends and research in instructional technology. We will explore the use of emerging technologies in teaching and learning such as Second Life (a web-based 3D virtual world). A panel of GW students will give their own first-hand accounts of which technologies and learning approaches students are really using. We will also look at eTeaching standards and practices here at GW and how these practices can increase student engagement in all types of classes.

Day 3: Engaging Students In and out of the classroom

Thursday, August 21 (9:00am-4:30pm)

This day offers hands-on workshops focused on creating materials for classroom, hybrid, or fully online courses. We will delve into the what and the how-to of blogs and wikis, podcasts, and video.

A more detailed program will be available soon.
